Gold Coast Australia Day 2017 wrap

Gold Coast Police were pleased with overall crowd behaviour during Australia Day celebrations yesterday with no major incidents and minimal arrests, Queensland Police say.

Gold Coast District Superintendent Craig Hanlon said that it was heartening to see the community enjoying themselves in a safe, responsible and respectful manner.

"One arrest, one drink driver, one infringement notice is too many, however considering the large crowds and the number of various events held across the coast we are very pleased by the behaviour of the community." Superintendent Hanlon said.

Police arrested 15 people mostly in relation to public nuisance and traffic offences. Thirteen people were issued with infringement notices, nine for public nuisance and four for liquor offences.

One 17-year-old boy and seven men were issued with public nuisance infringement notices during an alleged altercation between a small group of men around 4.30pm in a carpark at Tallebudgera Creek, Palm Beach. No one sustained any injuries and the group was quickly dispersed by police.

Approximately 1342 random breath tests were conducted throughout the Gold Coast District with four positive readings.

"The Gold Coast is a great place to live and to visit and celebrate special events like Australia Day especially when we see generally good behaviour by everyone. Police would like to thank the community for making Australia Day 2017 a good one." Superintendent Hanlon said.
