Government hits the right note for music development

The State Government is providing a significant funding boost to support aspiring contemporary musicians in 2019.

Minister for Industry and Skills David Pisoni has announced $374,500 committed by the Marshall Government will benefit four organisations to enhance programs supporting the careers of musicians and further development of music in South Australia.

"This funding being delivered by Music Development Office, is going to organisations with a proven ability to foster and champion South Australian talent," he said.

"The Contemporary Music Organisations funding supports programs and activities that create a pathway for professional musicians and industry entrepreneurs from early support, through to ongoing career development."

This funding follows more than $100,000 awarded by the State Government in August to assist skills development, events, touring, recording and marketing costs that are usually borne by South Australian music professionals.

Minister Pisoni said the recent funding enables enterprises to receive the capital they need to support emerging artists and events to thrive in South Australia's celebrated music scene revered by many in the industry.

"The 2019 applicants were assessed on their ability to meet criteria assessed by a diverse group of industry professionals, who were impressed by the merit of every submission."

The organisations receiving funding are:

  • Music SA – $195,000 (multi-year funding 2019 – 2021)
  • Northern Sound System – $114,500
  • Nexus – $40,000
  • Creative Original Music Adelaide (COMA) – $25,000

"Organisational funding is just one category of many grant opportunities offered through the Music Development Office," Minister Pisoni said.

"Among the many success stories emerging from this latest round of grants has been the Field Good Festival, a Fleurieu Peninsula music event that saw hundreds of attendees celebrate an all-South Australian line-up in the picturesque Inman Valley," he said.

"This is a positive example of how we can support creative South Australians to pursue their passions and still experience great business success."
