Government must prioritise affordable housing

Tasmanian Labor
  • Huntingfield must include more social and affordable housing
  • Five per cent social and affordable housing not good enough
  • Government's track record is appalling
  • Recent reports from Kingborough Council that the proposed housing development at Huntingfield might include as little as five per cent social housing should be a real concern, particularly while Tasmania is in the grips of a housing crisis.

Shadow Housing Minister Alison Standen said the State Government had a terrible track record on social and affordable housing.

"This development has been on the books for more than half a decade," Ms Standen said.

"The question must be asked - in the height of a housing and homelessness crisis, is five per cent social and affordable housing the best this Government can do?

"With more than 450 homes planned, a measly five per cent shows just how insincere the Government's promises to tackle these problems are.

"We know Minister Roger Jaensch is miles behind hitting his target of building 900 affordable homes before the end of the financial year.

"The Government must demand more social and affordable housing as part of the Huntingfield development before it's too late."
