Government must stop talking about infrastructure and start building

Tasmanian Labor
  • Government must not drag its feet on infrastructure projects
  • Many projects have been plagued by embarrassing delays
  • Government must get on with the job and deliver
  • Labor is sceptical the government will deliver on its renewed commitment to key infrastructure projects in Tasmania, given its appalling track record.

Shadow Infrastructure Minister, Shane Broad, said fast tracking key projects was crucial to help pull Tasmania out of the COVID-19 economic crisis, but warned the government could not drag its feet.

"Labor has been continuously calling on the government to get on with the job of delivering key infrastructure projects for this state, but unfortunately many have been plagued by delays or are yet to get off the ground," Dr Broad said.

"We have seen embarrassing delays in several major projects including the Bridgewater Bridge, Royal Hobart Hospital and the new TT-Line vessels.

"The government has a historical record of underspending in infrastructure and today's economic and fiscal update shows as of March 31, the government had only spent $300m out of its $700m infrastructure budget.

"How is the government going to build its way out of this crisis when it has demonstrated a complete inability to build anything?

"The government must also give a guarantee that it will support Tasmanian jobs by employing locals including apprentices and using local products.

"There's no time for more delays and I'm urging the government to get on with the job and deliver the results."

    Shane Broad MP

    Shadow Minister for Infrastructure
