Support from federal and provincial governments and provincial partners will ensure health research focuses on priorities identified by patients

Patients, their families, and caregivers are best placed to know what is important when receiving health care services. Through their personal experiences, patients bring valuable perspectives to research and pave the way for new and better ways to deliver care that will improve the health of all people in Canada.
Today, the Honorable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, announced a combined investment of more than $80 million over five years from the Government of Canada, the Government of Quebec, and provincial partners to support the ongoing work of patient-oriented research in the province through its SPOR SUPPORT Unit. The SPOR Support for People and Patient-Oriented Research and Trials (SUPPORT) Unit connects research with patient needs so that evidence-based solutions can be applied to health care.
Since 2014, the Quebec SPOR SUPPORT Unit, Unité de soutien SSA Québec, has been working to involve patients as partners in research projects and leverage their expertise as people with lived or living experience with illness or other health challenges. The Quebec SPOR SUPPORT Unit works to ensure that research results move from the lab or published article into policy and practice, to improve care, services and management in the province's health and social services network.
This new investment will help the Unité de soutien SSA Québec continue its important work. The funding is provided as part of Canada's Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR), a pan-Canadian initiative dedicated to integrating the voices of patients into research and health care. SPOR is led by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) with support from partners across the country.
