Grants Delivering Goods - Wollongong

With a $100,000 funding boost, the 2026/27 Sports Grant program is now open at Wollongong City Council.

The program targets local sporting clubs and associations and provides them with the opportunity to apply for funding to support their activities.

This financial year features a $500,000 funding pool which all clubs are welcome to apply for.

"There are so many people in our community who are involved in community sports and there is such a wide and wonderful variety of sporting codes played in the Wollongong Local Government Area,'' Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.

"We appreciate that these clubs are people-powered with like-minded community members offering their time and knowledge to keep these clubs moving forward and playing sports.

"The intention of this program is to provide an opportunity for clubs to gain funding for key works or equipment that helps them to Improve their sports facility or club. We know this is important and that's why Council has increased the total funding pool by $100,000 this financial year on what was offered in 2025/2026.''

Council is also offering support to clubs considering an application by offering an online session on how to write a grant application, as well as the option for one-on-one conversations with a Council staff member.

"We work within a strict criteria when it comes to assessing a grant application and we want to make sure as many people as possible understand this process and what we require,'' Cr Brown said.

"I'd encourage any of the clubs considering putting in an application to make sure they're talking with us before they do so they can be sure they're putting in the best application possible.''

The interactive webinar session will be held on Wednesday 29 July between 5.30-6.30pm with members of Council's sports and recreation team.

If you can't make this time, the session will be recorded, and a link provided to watch and listen to when it suits you.

Cr Brown said the grants opportunities look for projects that align with Council's Sports Strategy priorities:

  • Increase opportunities for people to participate in sport
  • Increase sportsground capacity and allow sites to be used for multiple sports and groups
  • Renew and enhance existing sporting infrastructure, with a focus on gender equity, accessibility, and storage
  • Invest in infrastructure to support and accommodate emerging sports and independent recreational pursuits.

Applications for Sports Grants 2026/2026 are open until midnight Sunday 23 August 2026.
