Seventeen local sport and recreation groups will share in almost $200,000 as part of Mildura Rural City Council's latest round of Recreation Assistance Grants.

Councillors last night endorsed the funding, which is aimed at helping local sport and recreation groups develop their facilities and programs, and the opportunities they offer the community for increased participation.

Councillor for Recreation and Events Mark Eckel said the successful grants program was very much about partnerships with the community.

"For Council as an organisation, this is a wonderful opportunity for us to support our hard-working sport and recreation groups," Cr Eckel said.

"But we must remember, it's these amazing groups that are doing the hard work, continually coming up with inventive, worthwhile initiatives that provide a whole host of opportunities and benefits for our community, and in the majority of cases they're almost entirely run by volunteers."

Recreation Assistance Grants are available in four different categories – Club Support Program, Recreation Planning Grant, Minor Facilities Upgrade Grant and Major Facilities Upgrade Grant.
