Steps towards a more inclusive and accessible community have been taken with the adoption of Griffith City Council's updated Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP).
Endorsed at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on Thursday, 19 June 2025, the Plan sets out clear, practical actions to make Griffith a place where people of all abilities can fully participate and thrive. The updated DIAP is now available to view online at www.griffith.nsw.gov.au/Residents/Community/Disability-Inclusion-and-Access
The DIAP is a blueprint for creating a more accessible city, where services, facilities, employment and community spaces are designed with everyone in mind.
Originally adopted in 2017, with a second plan endorsed in 2021, the DIAP is regularly reviewed to make sure it meets the changing needs of the community. Under the Disability Inclusion Act 2014, Council is required to update the Plan every four years.
Council invited the community to have their say during a public exhibition in April and May 2025, with more than 50 submissions received from local residents, community groups and Council staff. The Disability Inclusion & Access Committee also provided valuable insights, sharing real experiences to ensure the Plan reflects the challenges and opportunities faced by people living with disability.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said, the updated Plan demonstrates Council's ongoing leadership in fostering inclusion.
"Council is proud to champion accessibility and inclusion. This is about creating a City where people of all abilities feel welcomed, supported and empowered to participate in all aspects of life. "We are grateful to everyone who provided feedback," he said.
The updated DIAP links directly to Council's Strategic Plan, We are Griffith 2025-2035, focusing on Leadership, Liveability, Growth and Sustainability. Looking ahead, Council will undertake a remake of the DIAP in 2026, with further community consultation to ensure the objectives and strategies remain relevant and community-led.
