East Gippsland Shire Council is helping bring the Paynesville Classic Boat Rally (PCBR) to life, supporting the event through its Pathways to Growth program and joining forces with the Gippsland Lakes Boat Show to deliver a spectacular national boating weekend from 27 February to 1 March.
The biennial rally attracts boats and enthusiasts from across Australia, showcasing wooden boats, classic motorboats, sailing vessels, skiffs, fishing boats and small crafts. Vessels older than 25 years or of historical significance are highlights, giving visitors rare opportunities to see these magnificent boats up close and in action.
Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth, an active member of the local boating community, said the event was a highlight of the region's calendar.
"Living in a community shaped by both our coast and lakes, and spending as much time as I can on the water, I know just how special the Gippsland Lakes are," Cr Ashworth said.
"This weekend is about sharing that experience - celebrating classic boats, enjoying life on the water, and having a great time with family and friends. Council is proud to support an event that brings people together, boosts local businesses, and showcases our region to visitors from across the country."
The 2026 rally will feature a stunning fleet of classic boats, from majestic tall ships and elegant sailing vessels to vintage motorboats, skiffs and small crafts. On Saturday, the Grand Parade will see the boats glide past crowds and through the McMillan Strait into Lake Victoria, offering a spectacular display for all to enjoy. Visitors can also join tall ship cruises or take their own boat out on the Lakes to soak up the scenery and share the experience with fellow enthusiasts.
The Pathways to Growth program was developed to strengthen East Gippsland's homegrown events. The initiative provides organisers with professional training in planning, financial management, marketing, volunteer coordination and compliance, helping ensure events are sustainable and successful long term. The Paynesville Classic Boat Rally was selected as one of four signature events to participate in the 12-week program delivered by the Australian Centre for Regional Events, giving the team access to eLearning modules, live workshops and resources to create an even bigger, better experience for attendees.
On land, the foreshore will be buzzing with music, entertainment, maritime stallholders, and displays of trailered wooden, fiberglass and rowing boats. The weekend offers something for everyone whether you're a seasoned boater, a maritime enthusiast, or simply love life by the water.
