Guild Hails Interstate Prescription Reform Approval

The Tasmanian Branch of the Pharmacy Guild has welcomed the passage of the Poisons Act Amendment (Interstate Prescriptions) Bill 2025 in the Legislative Council today.

The Tasmanian Branch President Joe O'Malley congratulated the Parliament and noted the unanimous support for the reform.

"The Pharmacy Guild is delighted to see this Bill passing the Parliament with such strong support.

"This reform is all about making medications more accessible for Tasmanian patients and we are really looking forward to these changes coming into place as soon as possible next year.

"More and more we're seeing Tasmanian patients accessing care remotely via the mainland, so when it's easier for them to get scripts filled that means better health outcomes for our community."

Mr O'Malley said the Guild was committed to working with the Government to ensure community pharmacists and local health professionals were aware the changes were coming.

The reforms are expected to be operational in early 2026.

"Community pharmacists in Tasmania have been supporting our patients through these challenges for decades now, and we thank the State Government for taking action on this issue."
