After more than a decade, one of Victoria's most beloved community sporting events is making its long-awaited return. Take the Plunge Swim Classic will make waves once again at the Harold Holt Swim Centre on Sunday 30 November 2025.
First launched in 1993, Take the Plunge quickly rose to prominence as Victoria's premier grassroots swim event. For 20 consecutive years, it attracted swimmers of various ages and skill levels, becoming a favourite on the local sporting calendar.
The event also welcomed some of Australia's most iconic Olympic swimmers including Matt Welsh, Libby Trickett, Leisel Jones, Brooke Hanson, and Michael Klim who inspired a generation of young athletes and fans alike.
Now, 11 years since its last lap, the event brings with it a legacy of excellence, while embracing a renewed focus on community, inclusion, and fun sporting participation for all.
Hosted by City of Stonnington, the relaunch responds to overwhelming community demand, bringing back a cherished tradition that blends competitive spirit with local pride.
At the heart of the event is the showpiece 1km swim, followed by a 400m swim and 50m sprint. Swimmers will compete across age divisions from Under 18's, Open and Over 65's, encouraging broad participation.
"We're incredibly proud to bring back an event that means so much to this community," said James Pratt, Leisure Services Coordinator.
Mayor Cr Melina Sehr said the return of Take the Plunge perfectly captures Stonnington's commitment to building an active, healthy and connected community.
"This event is about more than just swimming – it's about celebrating community, inclusion and the joy of being active together. Whether you're a first-time competitor or a seasoned swimmer, Take the Plunge embodies everything we stand for in Stonnington: participation, connection and pride in our local spirit," Cr Sehr said.
The celebration doesn't stop at the finish line. A pool party will follow the races, featuring a giant indoor and outdoor pool inflatable, sausage sizzle, music, and entertainment for all ages – transforming race day into a full-scale community event.
