New cycle lanes? Playgrounds? Widening of footpaths? Increased recycling collection? Community Events? How would you like to see your rates spent, because the City of Hobart wants to hear from you.

The City of Hobart has announced the commencement of its 2024-25 Budget consultation process, inviting the community to participate by making budget submissions.

This initiative aims to enable the people of Hobart to have direct input into the Budget development process.

In 2023-24, the City of Hobart will deliver a $167.5 million Budget that is designed to support the City's continued growth and transformation, balancing financial challenges, while maintaining existing services and infrastructure.

It also paves the way for an array of projects that are set to establish Hobart as an even more vibrant and prosperous place to live, work, visit, and invest.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping the city's future.

"We believe that the community is an invaluable source of ideas and insights that can contribute to the development of our city," Cr Reynolds said.

"Opening the 2024-25 Budget to community consultation is a reflection of our commitment to transparency and inclusivity."

While the upcoming budget is open to all ideas from the community, it is important to note that this is not a grants process.

Proposals submitted for the 2024-25 Budget will be carefully considered within the framework of Council's strategic priorities.

To maintain focus on our local community, proposals must align with local government objectives and responsibilities, rather than those at the state or federal level.

Submissions can range from cycling infrastructure, local roads and footpaths to household waste, recycling and FOGO collection; from city cleaning, stormwater and bushfire management (including fire trail maintenance and upgrades) to supporting the Hobart Community, through programs and events.

Maintaining and managing Hobart's iconic parks, reserves and sporting facilities could also be the basis of submissions.

"It's important to remember that this is not about grants, but rather about investing in projects that are aligned with our strategic priorities as a local government," Cr Reynolds said.

"We want to work closely with the community to fund projects that will benefit our city at the grassroots level."

The City of Hobart encourages residents, businesses, and stakeholders to actively participate in the budget consultation process by sharing your thoughts, suggestions, and aspirations with us.

There will also be drop-in sessions available for those interested to come along and ask questions about the process and their submissions.
