The Gold Coast community is invited to have its say on proposed updates to the City Plan, the document that guides the growth and development of our city.
Mayor Tom Tate said the City Plan was guided by the Queensland Government's Shaping SEQ, which sets regional growth projections the city needs to accommodate to 2041.
"The Gold Coast continues to grow at one of the fastest rates in Australia," he said.
"We're committed to a journey of continual improvements to manage the city's growth responsibly while maintaining our enviable lifestyle. These proposed updates aim to improve our City Plan by responding to community and industry feedback.
"I encourage all those who care about our city's future and in protecting their lifestyle to take this opportunity to have their say."
Mayor Tate said the proposed updates will cover six themes, including:
- height and density to create a sustainable city shape
- built form and urban design, highlighting the importance of a well-designed city
- targeted growth areas and how we will achieve growth responsibly
- growth and diversification of employment to stimulate economic growth and enable future job creation
- environment to safeguard our environmental values
- other land use changes and alignment improvements for clarity, consistency and alignment.
"Since the adoption of our new planning scheme - the City Plan, we have been working on ways to improve its operation, consistency and clarity," he said.
"Out of 1199 issues identified from community and industry feedback on the City Plan (as at 31 December 2018), we have addressed 759 issues and allocated a further 440 for amendments in future packages.
"We want everyone to have their say and will be running a number of 'talk-to-a-planner' sessions across the Gold Coast so the community can ask questions and provide their feedback."
Jason Murdoch, Urban Development Institute of Australia Queensland Gold Coast Logan Branch President, said the institute looked forward to being part of the conversation regarding the future of the Gold Coast.
"This is an important opportunity for the community and industry to collaborate with council to shape our city as it grows," he said.
