Hawkesbury Council Marks International Women's Day

Hawkesbury City Council proudly welcomed local women, community leaders and Australia Day Award recipients to a special morning tea today in celebration of International Women's Day.

All attendees posing for a photo in the Council ChambersHeld in the Council Chambers, the event brought together men and women from across the Hawkesbury to honour women's achievements, strengthen community connections and reflect on the global theme of this year's International Women's Day, "Give to Gain".

Deputy Mayor of Hawkesbury Councillor Sarah McMahon hosted the morning tea and said it was an important opportunity to recognise the generosity, commitment and influence of local women, noting that supporting and uplifting women is key to achieving gender equality.

"As individuals, organisations and community members, we can all give for Gender Equality. Whether it's through giving knowledge, resources, donations, education, mentoring or even time - having a mindset of generosity and collaboration contributes to women's advancement, which benefits us all."

The event also included the presentation of the Australia Day Sportsperson of the Year awards to Leanne Leach and Mackenzie Patterson Hollibone, who were unable to attend the official ceremony in January.

Counillors and award winners attending the IWD morning teaLeanne was recognised for her longstanding contribution to Hawkesbury Netball and Mackenzie was honoured for her dedication and achievements in Showjumping.

Hawkesbury City Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett, who presented the awards said, "Having Leanne and Mackenzie here to receive their awards today was a very fitting way to celebrate International Women's Day."

"These two women are incredible contributors to their vocations and give so much of their time strengthening our community."

Also in attendance were this year's Citizen of the Year, Bruce Earle, and Young Citizen of the Year, Bailey Carle, who joined the community in celebrating the achievements of local women. Their participation highlighted the importance of acknowledging women's leadership, service and influence across all areas of community life.
