The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), assisted by the NSW Rural Fire Service, will be conducting a hazard reduction burn in Mimosa Rocks National Park adjacent to Tathra-Bermagui Road on Monday 16 August 2021.
NPWS Acting South Coast Area Manager Paula Tomkins said the strategic location of the burn, just west of the Gillards campground and beach, would help to limit the potential spread of wildfire to private properties in the area.
"At this stage, the weather conditions are looking favourable for us to undertake this 200-hectare burn on Monday with minimal impacts on the local community," said Ms Tomkins.
"Smoke may be visible to residents in Nelson, Tanja, Tathra and Mogareeka. If you are vulnerable to smoke, we encourage you to stay indoors and keep your doors and windows closed to reduce your exposure," said Ms Tomkins.
To ensure visitor safety while the burn is underway, Gillards campground and access road will be closed during the operation. Traffic management will also be in place along Tathra-Bermagui Road.
This burn is one of the many that National Parks and Wildlife Service are working hard to carry out across our national parks in the NSW South Coast region during Spring 2020.
Depending on conditions, other burns may be carried out across the South Coast region in coming weeks so smoke may be visible for several days.
All burns across New South Wales are coordinated with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) to ensure the impact on the community, including from smoke, are assessed at a regional level.
