Tamworth Regional Council in partnership with the RSPCA and TAFE is running a Healthy Pet Day program between 9am and 1pm.
Healthy Pet Day includes free pet care services to those eligible, and takes hands-on action to improve and ensure the health and wellbeing of pets in our community.
Services including health checks, vaccinations, microchipping and general advice and are on offer to residents of the Tamworth region. It's expected that 70 dogs and 25 cats will be provided care throughout the event.
The service is available to pensioners, concession card holder and registered job seekers living in the Tamworth region. Eligible residents could register up to two animals per household with services offered to litters under certain circumstances, however, breeders are not eligible.
The Healthy Pet Day is taking place at the newly re-named Tamworth Regional Companion Animal Centre (previously named Tamworth Regional Pound).
Director Liveable Communities, Gina Vereker said the rebranding is part of a wider shift away from the word 'Pound'.
"The rebranding of the Tamworth Regional Animal Companion Centre is in-line with the Companion Animals Act and part of a move away from the word 'Pound'. That name has negative connotations and doesn't accurately represent what the facility does and how it does it. Today is a perfect example of this, we are doing health checks, microchipping and vaccinations as part of an overall companion animal service."
The new name also better reflects Council's new role in operating the shelter previously known as the 'Heaven Can Wait Animal Shelter and Boarding Kennels' for the next 12 months, to ensure that as many of the dogs that come into Council's care as possible can be rehomed.
