Heat-related incident in New Farm, QLD

Police are praising the actions of a passer-by for helping to avoid a heat-related medical emergency in New Farm this afternoon, Queensland Police say.

Around 1.30pm, a man called police to say that his wife had noticed a young child on his own in a car in the underground car park of a shopping centre on Merthyr Road.

The conditions in the car park were extremely hot, and noticing the child was possibly asleep, the woman had grave concerns for him.

Police attended shortly after and removed the child from the car via an unlocked door.

The boy was put inside a police vehicle to cool down in the air conditioning before being transported to the Lady Cilento Hospital as a precaution for further observation.

A man is assisting police with their enquiries in relation to the incident.

Police are urging the community never to leave children unattended in vehicles – particularly in the current severe heatwave conditions being experienced in southern parts of Queensland.
