After a long stretch of social isolation, Sunshine Coast Council anticipates more local residents will be moving around this long weekend and as such, is calling on motorists to adhere to parking regulations to help businesses and keep our community safe.
Group Executive Customer Engagement & Planning Services James Ruprai said with some COVID-19 restrictions being lifted by the Queensland Government from Saturday (May 2), residents were reminded not to park longer than permitted or park illegally or unsafely, if parking spots were hard to find.
It is important for all members of our community and for local businesses that we all adhere to parking time limits and park safely," Mr Ruprai said.
"Many local businesses have been challenged as a result of COVID-19 restrictions so let's remember the importance of only parking for the time allowed in areas where time limits apply, so there is parking turnover for the customers of these businesses.
"Council wants to ensure our residents can safely access our public spaces – our beaches, our parks and our business precincts – so all residents are strongly encouraged to follow the road rules and park legally.
"While the vast majority of people have been done the right thing, council has seen some drivers acting irresponsibly including parking in disability access bays."
On-street parking meters in Birtinya and Caloundra will remain turned off until Tuesday, 30 June 2020.
Parking time limits still apply in those areas, to encourage turnover to maximise parking availability to encourage shoppers into those local businesses.
Council and Queensland Police Service will continue to work together to ensure people are adhering to the conditions in place.
