Help Shape Future Of Place Names In Georges River

Georges River Council

Georges River Council has updated its Place Naming Policy and is inviting the community to submit feedback.

The Place Naming Policy sets out how Council names places, roads, and facilities, and how it manages requests for memorial plaques and trees in the Georges River area.

The Policy has been completely refreshed to make it easier to read and use. It keeps Council's existing priorities and introduces key improvements, including:

  • Clear structure: Five sections – General Principles, Names of Council Assets, Memorials, Consultation, and Signage.

  • More name options: Expanded categories to include flora, fauna, natural features, and multicultural representation.

  • Simpler memorial requests: Easier criteria for applying for a memorial plaque on a Council bench.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "The updated Policy reflects the unique history and culture of Georges River."

"Place names tell the story of our community. This updated Policy makes it easier for everyone to understand how names are chosen and gives more options to celebrate our heritage, diversity and environment."

"Your feedback will help shape the final Policy and ensure it reflects what matters most to our community."

The draft Policy is on public exhibition until 12 December 2025. You can read the full draft and share your feedback online or by completing a hard copy form at our Customer Service Centres or Libraries.
