Henley On Todd Regatta Celebrates 63rd Year Return

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is reaffirming its commitment to regional events, proudly supporting the return of the Henley on Todd Regatta in Alice Springs this Saturday for its 63rd year.

Renowned as the only dry river boating event in the world, the Henley on Todd Regatta draws thousands each year for a series of Flintstone-style bottomless 'boat' races on the dry bed of the Todd River.

Minister for Tourism and Hospitality and Major Events Marie-Clare Boothby said the Regatta's impact extended well beyond the riverbank.

"Community events like the Henley on Todd Regatta deliver real outcomes and benefits for Territorians, playing a key role in our commitment to rebuilding the economy and restoring our unique Territory lifestyle," said Ms Boothby.

"These events drive visitation to Central Australia and support local businesses, providing a valuable economic and social boost to our regions."

Kicking off with the street parade, activities include Little Nipper events, 'Build Your Own Boat' race, giant hamster wheel races, and the hugely popular 'Battle of the Gun Boats' finale.

The Regatta is the major fundraiser for the Rotary Clubs of Alice Springs, raising more than $1.7 million for local charities since the event began in 1962.

Minister Joshua Burgoyne, Member for Braitling, said the Regatta served as a platform to showcase Alice Springs to a broader audience.

"The Henley on Todd Regatta shines a spotlight on Central Australia and showcases the unique character of our great region," Mr Burgoyne said.

"This event attracts thousands of local, interstate, and international visitors each year, putting Central Australia on the national and international stage for community events."

Minister Bill Yan, Member for Namatjira, said the Henley on Todd was an important showcase of Alice Springs' vibrant community spirit.

"This is a true Territory tradition that puts our unique lifestyle here in Central Australia on show," said Mr Yan.

"We promised Territorians a year of action, certainty, and security, and supporting iconic Territory events like the Henley on Todd is part of delivering on that promise."

Henley on Todd Regatta Commodore Michael Hooke said: "There's been a huge amount of interest in Alice Springs and we're expecting a crowd of about 3000-4000 people on Saturday. We can't wait to see the Todd River packed with those competing in the colourful chaos and everyone lining the banks to cheer them on."

"While providing lots of healthy, fun and entertainment, the Regatta makes a real difference in Alice Springs by raising funds for the Combined Rotary Clubs of Alice Springs."

The Regatta is supported through the Community Benefit Fund, with funding secured for three years to ensure its success until 2027.
