Heritage and tourist railway finally get support they've been asking for

  • Heritage Rail finally gets support it needs
  • Months of calls answered
  • Liberal's copy Labor's policy
  • Labor welcomes the announcement of financial support for tourist and heritage railways across the state.

Shadow Minister for Tourism Rebecca White said Tasmania's historic railways are crucial to many regional communities and offer significant opportunities for economic stimulus and employment growth.

"Labor is pleased to see its calls for investment in these important attractions have finally been answered," Ms White said.

"Exorbitant public liability insurance premiums have been threatening to derail these grassroots enterprises which are largely run by volunteers.

"It's a huge relief that 90 percent of the cost of those premiums will be covered by the Government at least in the first year.

"This will remove one of the barriers that has prevented these tourism rail operators from getting back on the track and offering exciting experiences for visitors and locals alike.

"Heritage railway groups offer an exciting and valuable tourism experience for our state, and it's gratifying to see the government finally responding to their financial needs and getting on board with this proposal."
