The Rockliff Liberal Government is working hard to improve road safety around Tasmania.
In a coup for our State, more than 600 delegates are expected to head to Tasmania next October for the 2024 Australasian Road Safety Conference in Hobart.
Announced at the close of this year's event in Cairns, the event brings together road safety advocates, researchers and decision makers from Australasia and around the world with the goal of reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
The conference, from October 1 – 3, is facilitated by the Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS) with the support of the Tasmanian Government.
"We're very pleased to have the opportunity to host such an important conference to tackle the unacceptable level of road trauma, with 1,200 deaths and almost 40,000 hospitalisations on Australian roads each year," said the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson.
"We know that each and every jurisdiction continues to feel the pain of road deaths so by coming together we can work on sharing information and ideas and finding more solutions.
"Every death and serious injury on our roads is an avoidable tragedy – and every one of us has a responsibility to drive safely."
The Chair of the Tasmanian Road Safety Advisory Council, Scott Tilyard, welcomed the opportunity for Hobart to host next year's conference and commended the Tasmanian Chapter of the ACRS for securing the event in Tasmania.
"It is an important opportunity for us to host the conference and to have so many passionate and knowledgeable people in the one spot sharing their ongoing research and ideas," said Mr Tilyard.
"We're all striving for the same result, and that's to reduce the road toll.
"Collaboration is essential so that we can learn from each other and by hosting this conference we are demonstrating our commitment to help save lives."
This will be the second major road safety event to be hosted in Tasmania in 2024, following on from National Road Safety Week in May 2024.
