  • The Commissioner for Children and Young People's monitoring of Tasmania's out-of-home care system highlighted that young people in out-of-home-care continue to fall through the cracks.

Shadow Minister for Child Safety Josh Willie said despite many good service providers, foster carers and people in the sector, the Liberal Government remains a less than ideal parent.

"We know that Will Hodgman and his Government have a terrible track record when it comes to child safety," Mr Willie said.

"The Commissioner's Report shows that Minister Jaensch quietly stopped using a 'for profit provider' after serious allegations were raised in the media.

"The Government has confirmed it is still sending young people off to boot camp in the Northern Territory.

"We know that in 2016, the Government paid $800,000 to send only three children to the facility. This should concern every Tasmanian.

"Several submissions to the Report say that there are serious barriers for children to get access to health services in the system, including mental health, in a timely manner.

"Delays can lead to children and young people developing preventable conditions.

"The Commissioner also finds that some Aboriginal children and young people in out-of-home care don't have access to cultural planning or even workers who are aware of their background.

"Many young people don't have case plans, or they're out of date, and the sharing of information between the Government and providers is inadequate.

"The Liberals aren't listening to young people, providers of out-of-home care or the community and quite frankly, Tasmanians deserve much better."
