Horticultural Volunteer Program Thrives After 20 Years

NCA

This International Volunteer Day, the National Capital Authority (NCA) is celebrating 20 years of its horticultural volunteer program, recognising the dedicated individuals who have lovingly tended to one of the National Triangle's cherished spaces.

Since mid-2005, the Old Parliament House rose gardens have flourished under the care of volunteers who have pruned, planted, and nurtured hundreds of blooms. Their commitment has transformed the garden into a thriving display of beauty, delighting visitors and creating a lasting legacy for the future.

Of the 72 volunteers that are currently in the program, 9 have been with the program for 20 years - since the very beginning.

Volunteer groups work on various gardens across both the House of Representatives and Senate Gardens.

The Horticultural volunteer program offers opportunities for people to connect with nature, learn horticultural skills, and be part of a team that keeps the garden blooming year after year.

As the program looks to the future, the NCA is calling on new volunteers to join us and help bring the newly refreshed National Rose Gardens to life.

Expected to start in February 2026, those interested can find out more information and register on the NCA website.
