Hotel patrons evacuated following city fire

Over three hundred people were evacuated following a fire on Elizabeth Street in Melbourne last night, Victoria Police say.

Emergency services were notified of the fire after receiving numerous calls to Triple Zero (000) shortly after midnight.

The fire was started at the rear of a supermarket which backed onto Rothsay Lane.

As a precaution near-by buildings, being a residential hotel, were evacuated.

The supermarket sustained external damage to air-conditioning ducts, windows and access doors.

Two other buildings were also damaged in the fire.

No one was injured and the scene was cleared at 1.30am with hotel guests returning to their rooms.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and investigators are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
