How is your business performing compared with your competition?

Benchmark ratios for the 2019 financial year provide updated measures against which small and medium businesses can compare their activity, Stats NZ said today.

Financial ratios, such as return on total assets, return on equity, and current ratio, are available for small and medium businesses in more than 220 industries.

In addition, key financial information including income, expenditure, profit, and assets is available for more than 480 industries.

In the 2019 financial year:

  • very small landscaping businesses typically made $100 profit for every $1,000 of assets they owned
  • small takeaway food operators had 81 cents of cash and current assets available for every $1.00 of debt due in the next year
  • medium sized hairdressing and beauty businesses earned income of between $166,000 and $309,000
  • jewellery and silverware manufacturers had a combined total of $127 million in assets.

The update includes data for the 2017, 2018, and 2019 financial years.
