Upgrades to the ever-popular Howitt Park family playground are continuing and will be completed over the next few weeks by East Gippsland Shire Council's works team.

Visitors to the playground will see the equipment near the picnic area upgraded, new feature garden beds constructed adjacent to the picnic area, new park furnishings including park seats, three locally-made picnic settings and bin enclosures added, and supplementary grasses planted.

Mayor Cr Natalie O'Connell said these works will add to upgrades completed to equipment and surrounding amenities progressively over the past 12 months.

"The Howitt Park playground and picnic area has for generations been enjoyed by local families and visitors and these recent upgrades will ensure it remains as popular as ever," Cr O'Connell said.

"Overall, the project has included new bollards and park furniture, garden bed improvements and the installation of 'play' bike racks."

"The 25-metre yellow slide and flying fox remain as great features as well as existing toilets, shade sails and picnic area."

The area is ideally positioned for the travelling public and visitors, with fantastic views over the Mitchell River, access to the Mitchell River Walking Track, BMX track and soccer/athletics fields, and near the culturally significant Aboriginal canoe tree.
