A project that will divert tonnes of materials from landfill and save more than $300,000 a year in state legislated landfill levies is ready to begin its next stage early in 2022, with Melton City Council appointing a contractor this week.
The Melton Recycling Facility Stage Two upgrade will include a new drive-through recovery building and resale shop at the front of the facility, encouraging better separation and recycling, particularly of items in good condition and fit for reuse (such as furniture, bikes and building materials).
A new sorting shed and loading tunnel for bulk haul transporting, additional resource recovery and storage capacity will also be constructed in Stage Two, as well as improvements to internal and external roads.
The works are expected to deliver a return on investment in just four years and all sales from the resale shop will continue to go directly back into funding programs for people with disabilities.
City of Melton Mayor Cr Kathy Majdlik said the upgrade would make an important difference in resource recovery.
"The impact of this project will be significantly less material gong to landfill, which is critical in a fast-growing city like ours," Cr Majdlik said.
"Recovering more reusable items at the recycling facility will mean we have more low cost, quality secondhand items for our community at the new resale shop."
Stage Two is funded in partnership with the Victorian Government and Council.
Works are scheduled to begin in February 2022 and be complete by May 2023.
