Huge milestone for new Southern Queensland prison

The new Southern Queensland Correctional Centre project near Gatton has achieved a milestone with the appointment of a principal consultant.

Minister for Corrective Services Mark Ryan announced Guymer Bailey Architects as the successful contractor.

“I’m pleased to have Guymer Bailey Architects on board, as they have extensive experience in designing major infrastructure projects,” he said.

“Importantly, this milestone brings us closer to putting boots on the ground to build this facility.

“This $618.8 million facility will support more than 400 jobs during construction, and over 500 permanent jobs upon completion.

“It’s about investing in regional jobs today and for the future.”

Minister Ryan said the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre would be the first new prison in Queensland since 2012.

“This landmark infrastructure project is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s historic investment in community safety,” he said.

“When completed, this state-of-the-art facility will deliver approximately 1,000 beds for male prisoners.

“It will mean safer, less crowded, more effective prisons statewide, which will help reduce recidivism and keep communities safer.”

The facility is scheduled for completion in 2022-2023.
