Hume, Merri-bek Renew Timor-Leste Friendship Pact

Hume City Council and Merri-bek City Council are proud to announce the renewal of a longstanding Friendship Agreement with the Municipality of Aileu in Timor-Leste, reaffirming a shared commitment to international friendship, cultural exchange, and community collaboration.

This renewed five-year partnership builds on more than two decades of connection and cooperation between the three communities. It highlights the enduring strength and value of working together on community-led initiatives.

Mayor of Merri-bek, Councillor Helen Davidson, and Friends of Aileu Councillor Representative, Councillor Adam Pulford, signed the agreement in Coburg. The agreement was also formally signed in Aileu by Hume City Mayor, Councillor Jarrod Bell, and Mr João Bosco dos Santos, President Authority of the Municipality of Aileu.

Over the years, this unique partnership has supported health, education, youth development, and cultural exchange programs. It has fostered mutual learning and solidarity between Timor-Leste and Australia at the local government and community level.

The renewed agreement will allow the three municipalities to continue their efforts in opportunities such as climate resilience, sustainable development, and civic engagement.

The agreement is built on mutual support, recognising that communities in both Australia and Timor-Leste benefit from the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and cultural perspectives. The collaboration strengthens community resilience, deepens understanding, and empowers all involved to work together toward shared goals.

Hume City and Merri-bek councils also work closely with the Friends of Aileu community network – made up of individuals, schools, local groups, and service organisations – who are actively involved in strengthening the partnership.

This renewal marks a new chapter in the shared journey of Hume City, Merri-bek, and Aileu and reflects the importance of international friendships in building a more connected and compassionate world.
