Hume City Council's inaugural youth councillors are ready to begin their journey as decision makers in Hume City after being sworn in at the Council Chambers Broadmeadows on Thursday 11 December.
The 12-member Youth Council was formed as part of the Young Mayors Program, a partnership between Hume City Council and the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA), positioning young people to create change on issues that impact their future.
Elected by local youth in Hume in October, the Youth Council will collaborate throughout 2026 to identify priority areas and partner with Council to deliver projects and initiatives that address issues important to the community's younger generation, including safety, reducing youth crime, mental health, and creating vibrant spaces for young residents.
The program will support young people to learn about and participate in the systems that govern their lives, and influence decisions that impact their community.
The Young Mayors program has been designed by the Foundation for Young Australians and is based on successful models in the United Kingdom.
Hume City Council joins Mackay and Cairns in Queensland, Horsham in Victoria, and Wollongong in New South Wales to pilot the program in Australia, with plans to scale to councils across the country.
