Campaspe Shire Council is proud to be hosting an event recognising the 2025 International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), observed annually on 17 May.

This year, Council will host a community event at Hopwood Gardens in Echuca on Friday 16 May from 10.30 to 11.30 am. The event will feature a flag-raising ceremony and speeches to celebrate the day from community members with lived experiences.

Campaspe Shire Mayor, Cr Daniel Mackrell said Council looks forward to welcoming everyone to Hopwood Gardens and celebrating the power of love and acceptance.

"This year's theme is The Power of Communities which highlights the strength and resilience that comes from the collective solidarity of both the LGBTQIA+ community and allies.

"So whether you're part of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally, everyone is welcome to attend and show their support for inclusion and stand against LGBTQIA+ discrimination, not just in our local area, but everywhere," he said.

In support of IDAHOBIT, Council will raise pride flags in the CBD and in front of the Council offices in Echuca, as well as illuminating the front of the building with rainbow colours on the evenings of 16 and 17 May.

Cr Mackrell emphasised the Council's commitment to inclusivity and equality, saying, "This day reminds us that every person should be respected and valued without judgement. Discrimination has no place in our community. We must all work together to ensure everyone can live without fear of persecution or violence.

"By raising the pride flag and illuminating our buildings with rainbow colours, we are sending a powerful message of support and solidarity to the LGBTQIA+ community.

"IDAHOBIT is an opportunity for us to reflect on the challenges that remain and to renew our commitment to fighting discrimination in all its forms," he added.
