Campaspe Shire Council is supporting the Echuca Moama Pride Group to recognise the 2023 International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), which is observed annually on 17 May.
The group will host a community event including a flag raising and speeches at Hopwood Gardens in Echuca on 17 May from 10.30 – 11.30am to celebrate the day.
Echuca Moama Pride group representative, Mr. Stephen Andrews said that the event will be a great opportunity for residents to come together and show their support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
"We look forward to welcoming everyone to Hopwood Gardens and celebrating the power of love and acceptance.
"Whether you're part of the LGTBQIA+ community or you're an ally, everyone is welcome to attend and show their support for inclusion and stand against LGBTQIA+ discrimination, not just in our local area, but everywhere."
In support of IDAHOBIT Council will be raising the pride flag in front of Council offices in Echuca and will be illuminating the front of building with rainbow colours in the evening of 16 and 17 May.
Campaspe Shire Mayor Rob Amos said Council is proud of its inclusivity and is committed to promoting equality for all.
"This day reminds us that every person should be respected and valued without judgement,' said Mayor Amos.
"Discrimination has no place in our community. We must all work together to ensure everyone can live without fear of persecution or violence."
"On this important day, we invite the community to join us to reflect on the challenges faced by our LGBTQIA+ community and to reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all," Mayor Amos added.
