Illawarra's Growth: From Fields to Precincts

From fields to precincts: unlocking Illawarra's next wave of growth

The Property Council of Australia will bring together local leaders from sport, government and the property sector in Wollongong on Thursday this week (4 June) to explore how sports and entertainment hubs can unlock the region's next phase of growth.

Property Council Illawarra Shoalhaven Regional Director Matthew Wales said the shift from single-use facilities to integrated precincts was transforming how cities grow and connect.

"This is about turning venues into destinations – places where people work, live, play and visit, not just on game day but every day," Mr Wales said.

"For a growing region like the Illawarra, getting these precincts right can unlock new housing, boost tourism, support local businesses and create more vibrant centres," he said.

The event, From Fields to Precincts: Building Vibrant Sports and Entertainment Destinations, will feature key industry and government figures shaping major projects locally and nationally.

St George Illawarra Dragons CEO Tim Watsford will share how sporting organisations can anchor successful precincts, driving engagement and commercial activity beyond game day.

Venues NSW CEO Kerrie Mather will outline how major venues are evolving into multi-functional precinct assets and what underpins long-term investment success, while BESIX Watpac CEO Mark Baker will provide a delivery perspective on designing high-performing, multi-use stadiums.

Speakers from CBRE, Cox Architecture and BM+G will also contribute insights on planning, design and market dynamics shaping modern precincts.

The discussion will focus on:

  • How sports precincts can drive urban renewal and economic activity
  • Funding and delivery models for major infrastructure
  • The role of partnerships in accelerating investment
  • Activating precincts through events, hospitality and placemaking
  • Creating destinations that support a 24-hour, seven-day economy

Mr Wales said Wollongong is well placed to capitalise on this shift.

"We've got the assets, the population growth and the lifestyle appeal, now it's about bringing it together through smart planning and coordinated investment.

"If we get this right, these precincts won't just host events, they'll help shape the Illawarra's economic and social future."

The event will be held at WIN Entertainment Centre, Wollongong on 4 June 2026.
