Illegal, Dangerous Driving Incident in Tallai

Police have charged a man after a stolen caravan containing three children crashed at Tallai yesterday afternoon.

Around 5.30pm, a 59-year-old Tallai man attended a Glenrowan address in his Nissan X-Trail where he attached a 1.5 tonne caravan, which was parked in the driveway, to the rear of his station-wagon using a single ratchet strap.

A 40-year-old woman, who is known to the man, and her three children – a 7-year-old, 5-year-old and 2-year-old – were on board the caravan at the time. The woman's pet dog was underneath.

The woman exited the caravan, at which time the man allegedly towed it onto Worongary Road, injuring the dog.

The caravan gained momentum down the hill, moving passed the X-Trail, before both vehicles crashed into a ditch approximately 80 metres from the driveway.

The woman climbed on top of the caravan and retrieved her children through a sky-light. All three children were uninjured.

The 59-year-old driver was transported to hospital as a precaution.

The dog, a female rottweiler, sustained leg and head injuries.

A 59-year-old Tallai man has now been charged with one count of each unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He is due to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court on 10 November 2025.
