Illicit tobacco seizures in northern suburbs

Northern District police have seized a large quantity of illicit tobacco after searching two businesses today.

On Monday 6 February, Northern District police attended businesses at Smithfield and Elizabeth North to conduct searches under the Tobacco Act.

At the Smithfield premises police seized 220kg's of cut and unpackaged tobacco, 55,000 imported/illicit cigarettes and 1300 nicotine vapes.

Searches at Elizabeth North uncovered a number of resealable unmarked bags containing chopped tobacco, over 5000 imported/illicit cigarettes and over a hundred nicotine vapes.

A 53-year-old woman from Elizabeth North who was present at the business was issued with an expiation notice for selling tobacco without a licence and selling tobacco with non-compliant packaging.

Police investigations are continuing into the seizure and further action is expected.
