IMO, Global Maritime Training Institutions Foster Cooperation

A joint meeting of senior officials from IMO, the World Maritime University (WMU) and IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) has been held (13 July), to enhance cooperation between IMO and its two global maritime training institutions on key strategy matters and common policy areas of interest and align the institutions' work with IMO objectives and goals.

The meeting between members of the IMO Senior Management Committee, the President of WMU, Professor Max Mejia, the Director of IMLI, Professor Norman A. Martínez Gutiérrez, and Faculty members of both institutions, was presided over by IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim.

During the meeting, views were exchanged with a view to enriching the collaboration between WMU and IMLI and IMO. In particular, the discussions focused on how the two maritime training institutions could further contribute to the regulatory and technical assistance work of IMO.

The Chair of the IMO Council, Mr. Victor Jimenez Fernandez, who also attended the meeting, suggested ways on how Member States could contribute to the further development of both institutions whilst ensuring their alignment with IMO's mission.

It was agreed that the trilateral meeting, which followed a similar one in 2020, was beneficial to all parties and will be organized on an annual basis.
