Important boost to Gold Coast Policing

More police will be deployed to the Gold Coast as the Queensland Police Service boosts personnel and infrastructure.

20 extra police officers will be added to the Gold Coast District by the end of the financial year.

This is on top of the more than 1,000 police officers already based on the Gold Coast.

14 of the extra 20 officers will be based at Coomera with the other 6 police to go to Nerang.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said the decision by the Police Commissioner to deploy the extra officers to the Gold Coast was in line with the government's commitment to invest in an extra 44 police on the Gold Coast by June 2022.

"The Queensland Police Service has closely examined the service requirements of the area and the Commissioner has decided those extra personnel will be best deployed at Coomera and Nerang," Minister Ryan said.

Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon welcomed the extra police presence on the northern Gold Coast as further support for community safety.

"We have over 1,000 police officers based on the Gold Coast and these extra resources will add to that capability in a growing area of the coast.

"I have been a strong advocate for community safety and I thank the Queensland Police Service for this further deployment of personnel," Ms Scanlon said.

The Police Minister was also on the Gold Coast to inspect progress on the major new police facility under construction at Arundel.

"Construction of the new Arundel Policing Hub is well advanced, and I am advised the project is on track for completion by December.

"The State Budget delivered more than $10m for the completion of the new facility.

"The Arundel Hub will play an important role in the borderless policing philosophy the Queensland Police Service has adopted.

"We will always back police by giving them state-of-the-art resources and facilities.

"The new facility will complement the District Tasking and Coordination Centre (DTACC) which monitors crime in real time and deploys police where needed across the Gold Coast.

"It is a centrally located facility with easy access to both the northern and southern corridors of the Gold Coast via the M1 for quick response to either end of the coast.

"The Rapid Action and Patrols (RAP) will be one of a number of policing units to be based at the facility," the Minister said.

The Police Minister and Member for Gaven also met with the latest group of young people inducted into the Project Booyah program on the Gold Coast.

Project Booyah is a police-led, award-winning mentoring program, that diverts troubled young people away from crime.

"Preventing crime is always better than arresting people after the fact.

"This is why programs like Project Booyah on the Gold Coast can make such an important difference," Minister Ryan said.
