Impound for the oblivious

A 26-year-old man has had his car impounded after he overtook a police car in Doveton this morning, Victoria Police say.

Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol members observed the car travelling city-bound on the Monash Freeway about 1.45am.

The Nissan SUV passed the marked police car, apparently oblivious to it, travelling at 105kmh in the 80kmh zone then almost hit another car just after the South Gippsland Freeway interchange.

It then moved right, into the middle lane, and increased its speed to 136kmh in the 80kmh road works zone before police managed to intercept it near Brady Road, Dandenong North.

The driver, from St Kilda, gave a positive Preliminary Breath Test and was taken to Dandenong Police Station where he underwent an Evidentiary Breath Test.

He returned a reading of 0.193%.

The man’s licence was immediately suspended and his car impounded for 30 days.

He will have to pay $961 towing and storage costs to get his car back.

The driver is also expected to be charged on summons at a later date for driving under the influence, drink driving and exceeding the speed limit.
