This project has been developed in response to consistent feedback from the local community, which called for more inclusive and accessible public spaces. Communication boards are a proven tool to support participation and interaction for children and adults with communication challenges.
The idea began to take shape when Early Connections Kempsey approached Council to share their vision for improving inclusion in parks and play spaces. With support and funding from Council, Early Connections brought Scope's specialist expertise in accessible communication design to the table.
Input from speech pathologists and staff who work directly with local children and families helped ensure the boards reflect the needs of our community. Kempsey Signs has also jumped onboard, providing generous support and will be installing the boards.
Communication boards make parks and community spaces more inclusive by supporting different ways of communicating. They can help children and adults express themselves, connect with others and take part in shared play and everyday interactions. The boards also encourage understanding and inclusion across the wider community by showing that everyone communicates in their own way.
Below is an example of the type of signage to be installed. The video shows the real-world application of a similar communication board in a park setting, including the layout, installation style, and how children use it to communicate during play.
Currently, three inclusive communication boards are to be installed in key parks across Kempsey Shire with each board tailored to its location:
- Riverside Park, Kempsey
- Horseshoe Bay Park, South West Rocks
- Baker Drive Park, Crescent Head
This project demonstrates the value of collaboration and shared commitment to creating a community and public spaces where everyone can play, connect and belong.
