Incorrect Payments Issued to Some Employment Insurance Family Supplement Recipients

April 18, 2019 Gatineau, Quebec Employment and Social Development Canada

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) recently identified a data error that may impact the calculation of the Family Supplement portion of certain Employment Insurance (EI) benefit payments issued in April. In some cases, this error resulted in inaccurate payments to EI recipients.

The Family Supplement is paid as a top-up benefit to EI claimants who have a net family income of up to $25,921 and who receive (or whose spouse receives) the Canada Child Benefit. The Family Supplement is the only EI-related payment that considers family income as opposed to an individual's earnings.

We apologize for the error and encourage those with questions regarding April EI benefit payments that may be incorrect to call Service Canada at 1-800-206-7218.

ESDC takes situations such as these very seriously and is taking measures to ensure this issue does not reoccur. Service Canada will be sending correction letters to all the individuals affected by this error.
