India Agreement Boosting Aussie Macadamias Industry

The Hon Julie Collins MP
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

The Albanese Labor Government has delivered another major technical market access achievement with more world class Australian macadamias now available in India, one of the world's fastest-growing economies.

Australia has secured improved trade conditions under a revised heat treatment protocol, managing risk to India without adversely affecting product quality.

The Indian and Australian Governments have agreed to an improved trade pathway worth $50 million to the Australian macadamia industry.

Australia is already the third largest producer of macadamias globally, with an export value of $188 million in 2023-24.

The industry is now forecasting a production increase from 53,950 tonnes in 2024 to 97,461 tonnes in 2029 and will benefit from more efficient export conditions with an important trading partner.

The opportunity in India is sizeable, with local importers showing increasing interest in and appetite for Australian macadamias, forecasting a six-fold increase in demand in the coming years.

The Albanese Labor Government has worked consistently to strengthen Australia's relationships with trading partners over the past three years.

Australia now exports over 70 per cent of our agricultural, fisheries and forestry production to 169 markets globally.

This is the most diversified our agricultural trade has ever been, thanks to the Albanese Labor Government.
