Inmate charged with murder, NSW

A man has been charged with murder following the death of another man at a correctional facility overnight, NSW Police say.

About 10.50pm yesterday, corrective services officers became aware of an assault occurring in a cell at the Long Bay facility.

A 71-year-old inmate was located in the cell with serious head injuries.

Officers rendered first aid before the man was transported to hospital, where he later died.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers. A number of items have been seized from the cell.

A 77-year-old inmate was detained by correctional officers, before being arrested by police from Eastern Beaches Local Area Command and taken to Maroubra Police Station.

Following inquiries by local detectives and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, the older man was charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court tomorrow.

Inquiries are continuing.
