Inner West Council has this week implemented 40km per hour speed limits on local streets in Enmore, Tempe, Sydenham, Marrickville and parts of St Peters and Petersham. The speed limit has been reduced from 50km per hour in these areas in an effort to make our local streets safer for the whole community.
This reduction in speed limits follows in-depth consultation with local residents in which 80 per cent of respondents supported our local streets having consistent 40km per hour speed limits.
Reducing speeds on local streets has been demonstrated to significantly reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities as well as improving the amenity and liveability of our neighbourhoods.
All of this can be achieved with minimal inconvenience to the travelling public and increases the potential to improve bus travel times across the Inner West.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said, "This reduction in speed limits on local streets will reduce crashes and fatalities while having almost zero impact on travel times.
"Local people know that the vast majority of travel time delays is caused by sitting idle in traffic, not the speed that you can drive at.
Further still, in most of our local streets the narrowness means that it is not possible to travel safely at 50km per hour."
In addition, speed limits on Victoria Road, Enmore Road, Bedwin Road and Edgeware Road, which are classified as Regional Roads, will be reduced by the NSW Government from 60km per hour to 50km per hour.
Inner West is working with Transport for NSW to introduce 40km per hour speed limits on more local streets across the whole of the Inner West.
Funding for the project has been provided by Transport for NSW.

The streets within the shaded area in the below map will become 40km per hour from Monday 7 July 2025. New signage and line markings have been implemented to improve safety and awareness.
