Inquiries into hammer assault continue in Lurnea

A man remains in custody after an alleged assault in Sydney’s south west this morning, NSW Police say.

About 6.20am today, a 50-year-old woman was at a bus stop on Hoxton Park Road, Lurnea, when she was approached by a man who allegedly struck her on the neck with a hammer, causing minor injuries.

The man then kept walking down Hoxton Park Road.

The woman contacted her husband who came to her aid and picked her up. They then drove down Hoxton Park Road, and saw the man at a service station, near the intersection of Webster Road.

The 55-year-old husband confronted the man and a struggle ensued. The man produced the hammer again.

During the struggle both men fell to the ground and the woman’s husband sustained a fractured arm.

Officers from Liverpool Local Area Command attended and arrested a 46-year-old man. Police recovered and seized the hammer.

He was taken to Liverpool Police Station where he is assisting with inquiries.

Charges are anticipated.

The husband and wife were treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and taken to Liverpool Hospital.
