International Energy Agency Ministerial Meeting 2022

It is a privilege to be appointed as a Co-Vice Chair for the International Energy Agency (IEA) Ministerial Meeting 2022.

The IEA Ministerial Meeting is an important biennial event that sets the future work program of the IEA. The 2022 Ministerial Meeting comes at a critical time for shaping the future of global energy governance and security.

Modernising the IEA's agenda is a key focus of the 2022 meeting, particularly in the context of moving towards a global low emissions energy future.

Australia is already a leader in this space. The Government is strengthening the reliability of our electricity grid while both lowering prices for Australian households and businesses, and reducing emissions.

Key issues on the IEA's modernisation agenda are aligned with the Government's Technology Investment Roadmap. The Government is investing $20 billion in low emissions technologies to drive at least $80 billion of total public and private investment by 2030.

More than $35 billion has been invested in Australia's renewable energy sector since 2017. Last year Australia deployed renewables at eight times the global per capita average, and four times the OECD per capita average.

Australia is supporting the development of new energy technologies, which are vital to achieving net zero emissions globally.

This is an important opportunity to share how Australia is contributing to a more affordable, reliable, clean energy future through our technology-led approach to reducing emissions.

I look forward to supporting United States Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm in her role as Chair, along with my fellow Co-Vice Chairs Mr Dan Jørgensen, the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, and Ms Tinne Van der Straeten, the Belgian Minister of Energy.
