Police have launched an investigation into a fatal crash in the state's Western Region overnight.
About 8.15pm (Friday 2 July 2021), emergency services were called to the Mitchell Highway near Thompson Road, Orange, following reports of a crash between a truck, and two vehicles involved in an earlier crash.
Officers attached to Central West Police District, NSW Ambulance paramedics and Fire and Rescue NSW attended the scene a short time later.
Police were told a BMW hatchback and a Toyota utility had collided at the corner of Thompson Road and the Mitchell Highway.
While a 15-year-old boy - a passenger of the Toyota - rendered assistance to the occupants of the BMW, a Prime Mover truck struck both vehicles.
The 15-year-old died at the scene.
The 17-year-old male driver of the Toyota, plus the occupants of the BMW, a 72-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman, were taken to Orange Hospital in a stable condition.
Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The truck driver – a man aged 48 – was taken to Orange Hospital for mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established, and the Crash Investigation Unit commenced an investigation.
Both lanes of the Mitchell Highway are closed, and diversions are in place.
Inquiries are continuing and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
