Investing in Bush: Remote Aboriginal Governance Grants Awarded

Grants of up to $50,000 havebeen awarded to 14 remote Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, aspart of the Territory Labor Governments Local Decision Making Agenda.

The Remote AboriginalGovernance and Capacity Building Grants help strengthen the capacity andcapabilities of Aboriginal organisations to better support them in developingcommunity-led initiatives and programs.

Aboriginal governance is thebackbone of local decision making and critical to ensuring local people drivecommunity-led solutions and service delivery at a community level.

Amongthe 14 successful applicants this year are the Yuendemu Womens CentreAboriginal Corporation, the Ngukurr Arts Aboriginal Corporation and theWuyagiba Bush Hub Aboriginal Corporation.

The Remote AboriginalGovernance and Capacity Building Grant Program will provide assistance forapplicants to:

  • Improve governance structures (including legal status and management ofgovernance arrangements)
  • Build leadership, negotiation and governance / board member skills andexpertise
  • Improve operational rigour (including financial accountability, projectmanagement, HR and procurement expertise)
  • Support community organisations in transitioning to local providers.

In this round, eight groups received grants of between$20,000 and $50,000 and six groups received grants of less than $20,000.

The total cost of this round is $448,577.

The Territory Labor Government is restoring local decisionmaking to remote communities.

Strong Aboriginal governance is necessary to support localpeople to lead local solutions, so I am pleased to be able to offer thissupport for 14 Aboriginal-led organisations.

By strengthening governance, leadership and capacity building,there are opportunities to improve accountability and strengthen communitycapacity for the future.

Local decisions are the best decisions.
