Jaensch needs to get his act together

Tasmanian Labor

Minister for Local Government and Planning Roger Jaensch bungled his way through Budget Estimates yesterday.

Shadow Minister for Local Government and Planning Anita Dow said Minister Jaensch had not only revealed delays on the review of the Local Government Act but had performed a spectacular backflip.

"In 2018 the Government announced the review of the Local Government Act and yesterday in Estimates it was revealed that the tabling of the new Act will be delayed again," Ms Dow said.

"As a result of this delay, the Government will undertake piecemeal legislative reform as required, instead of implementing the feedback it received through the review process and releasing a draft new Local Government Act.

"Just like the new Local Government Act, it was revealed yesterday that the State-wide Planning Scheme is still nowhere to be seen.

"And the Attorney General Elise Archer is going in to bat against Dorset Mayor, Greg Howard, in the Supreme Court as he appeals recent Code of Conduct investigation findings."

Ms Dow said Minister Jaensch had also finally declared his government's position on changing charitable rates remissions law.

"Minister Jaensch certainly had an interesting day yesterday, and it is clear it's time for the government to get their act together"
