James Dalamangas: 20 years as one of Australia's most wanted

Homicide Squad detectives are issuing a global appeal for public assistance to find one of Australia's most wanted men.

James Dalamangas, aged 48, is wanted in relation to the stabbing murder of Sydney man George Giannopoulos.

The 32-year-old father-of-two was stabbed after intervening in a dispute at a Belmore nightclub in Sydney's south west on Sunday 25 April 1999.

A warrant for the arrest of Mr Dalamangas was issued to NSW Police detectives on Monday 26 April 1999.

Despite extensive inquiries, police have been unable to locate Mr Dalamangas, who is believed to be living in Greece.

The NSW Police Force, with assistance from the Australian Federal Police, worked with Greek authorities to progress the investigation.

Detectives from the Homicide Squad are continuing their investigations under Strike Force Nerja and there is currently a $200,000 NSW Government reward available for information leading to the arrest of Mr Dalamangas.

Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Acting Superintendent Grant Taylor, said police are working closely with the Australian Federal Police to locate him.

"We know James Dalamangas fled Australia to Greece sometime in 1999 and we have information suggesting he is still there using the name 'John or 'Jim'," Det A/Supt Taylor said.

"This year marks 20 years since George's death and we are committed to finding Mr Dalamangas and providing the Giannopoulos family with some closure.

"We believe there are people who know where Mr Dalamangas is, but have not been forthcoming with information, despite a handsome reward.

"The $200,000 reward is available internationally, so we are urging anyone – whether in Australia, Greece, or wherever in the world – to come forward us and assist us in our pursuit of justice for George and his family," Det A/Supt Taylor said.

Mr Dalamangas, who is also known as 'John' and 'Jim', is described as being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance, between 180cm and 185cm tall, of medium build, with black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone who sees him or has information on his whereabouts is urged not to approach him but to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately.

The state's most wanted can be found online at www.police.nsw.gov.au/can_you_help_us/wanted.

Anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Nerja investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
